Hello, my name is Joelle Mumley…


…and I am the founder of Kupanga Mawazo. In Kiswahili, kupanga means ‘to arrange’ or ‘to organize’ and mawazo means ‘ideas.’ I am a writer who takes the ideas and structures that already exist and organizes, rearranges, and improves them.

as you work hard to run your successful business, you may feel overwhelmed by all the things you "should" be doing beyond your core work.

You want to market yourself, create content that increases people’s interest in your business, have human resource policies that make sense, send out a regular newsletter or blog, or contribute to thought leadership in your field through articles and publications. Maybe writing stresses you out. Or maybe you just aren’t able to make the time. Either way, you’re continually unable to make writing a priority. And, yet, it still seems to weight on you, constantly hovering just out of sight, making you feel overwhelmed by all you have to do.

A few years ago, as the director of operations at a cafe and venue space in downtown Seattle, I felt those same pressures. Who has time for updating or editing a manual when the sink is broken and several employees have called in sick? How can I prioritise writing new marketing materials when I have a huge order arriving and no space to store everything? I get it. Sometimes you just need a little help.

Whether it’s blog posts, website content, marketing materials, journal articles or internal documents, I can support your business. I have an educational background and significant work experience in writing, editing and entrepreneurship. I can create content from scratch, edit what is already there or work with you and your staff to produce what you need.  I have an undergraduate degree in literature and a master’s degree in social entrepreneurship, so I understand your role as a business owner and also have the skills to support your writing goals.

Most days you can find me sitting at my laptop, either in my home office or at a coffee shop. On days that I’m not working, I hope to be adventuring somewhere outside, spending time with friends and family, reading a book or watching a Liverpool match. I am American by nationality, but have spent most of my life in Kenya and hope to be here long-term. I’m structured and organized, but can go with the flow and be spontaneous when necessary. I’m an introvert who loves to go to restaurants with just a book for company or on solo game drives in Nairobi National Park, but I also love meeting new people and hearing their stories.
